Sending Flowers to People with Allergies

The best flowers to give without pollen.  Avoid wattle.  Anything that smells or has a perfume or anything that drops or sheds, like lilies, etc.

Flowers that do not cause reactions are known as hypoallergenic flowers.

The Top 5 Flowers To Give to Allergy Sufferers

1. Carnation

The safest flower to get someone who is highly allergic or suffers from hayfever is an old fashioned carnation with some greenery.  They look great & do not cause your loved one grief.  They can enjoy them without suffering over them.

2. Roses

Roses do not have pollen but they do have a scent.  Not all roses, however, are off the list.  Hot house roses do not have a scent & therefore are another safe flower to gift.

3. Succulents

Catci can flower on occasion with beautiful flowers, have no pollen & are great gifts for men.

4. Lilies

Lilies are pollen free, however there is a variety that have a strong scent, Oriental Lilies (Stargazer variety particularly).  Just remember, though, lilies are dangerous to cats & can be poisonous.  If your allergic loved one has a cat, best to stay away from a lily arrangement just in case.

5.  Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas come in a variety of colours & do not have pollen.  A bunch of them can look gorgeous.

Other Flowers With Low Pollen Counts Suitable to Give to Allergy Sufferers

Mostly having a low pollen count, orchids are generally safe.

As long as your loved one does not touch the tulips alot (they can sometimes produce a rash for allergy sufferers) a bunch of these lovely flowers can work just fine.

Sympathy Flowers

When customers ask me if my funeral work is nice I always explain that funeral work is my favourite work to do because it is somebody’s final gift to somebody & it has to be just right.

Megan Barker, Aangela’s Florist

There will be no other gift given to this loved one in this life.

In regards to sending flowers at a time of grieving, that is sympathy flowers, some people think that it is nice to send flowers after all the others may have wilted to freshen up the house, as it were, with more nice memories.

Once a certain amount of time has passed we recommend you do not send flowers but send a card.  Really, in my experience, the person who is mourning has had enough flowers.  They want the flowers to go and then they want to continue with their life in my experience.  Often more & more flowers just continuously remind them of their loss & their pain as they were so plentiful during the most intense time of grieving.

“Once it has been a couple of weeks…  the giving of flowers need to end…”

You can send bowls of fruit, a basket or send a card instead.  That is still thoughtful & food is practical.  Kind thoughts are always beautiful to receive & a healing balm when you know people love & care.

Funeral Tributes

Megan always asks of funeral tributes, “Is it a burial or a cremation?”

Flowers that are tributes go straight in the garbage bin.  That is the fact of it.  They have no home to go to, no one to claim them.  They have no place after the ceremony.

If gifting flowers for a cemetery or a burial they will have a home, whether they are placed at a grave or taken by people because they are comfortable taking bouquets & bunches home.

Choose sensibly & with grace when you choose the floral arrangements you buy at a time of sadness for funeral tributes & sympathy flower gifts.

A Helpful Guide by the Floral Valentine Guru of Aangela’s Florist, Megan Barker

I have celebrated 29 Valentine Day’s since starting work at Aangela’s florist in 1988 and purchasing in 1999.

By interacting with my customers, speaking, sharing stories, helping with choices & combinations & also with my own experiences as a woman, I have learned that it doesn’t matter if this is your 1st Valentine’s day together or your 60th, whether you purchase 1 rose or 20.  Any gift of flowers on Valentine’s Day is a Gift of Love & will be received with great joy & happiness.

Top 4 Tips for Choosing Valentine’s Day Flowers

  1. Roses are a favourite for some whereas with the large variety of flowers on offer a mixed bouquet can also be very lovely.
  2. Something white & graceful may be more your style, or something with wildflowers to remind your loved one of the passion you share.
  3. Teddy bears, chocolates & wine are always winners bundled alongside a gorgeous bouquet!
  4. February 14th can also be a day where the shy become a secret admirer to let that special someone know that you are thinking of them.  If you are one of these people it’s time to take a chance.  Let us help you!  Love is the LEAP that won’t be denied!

* BTW if your loved one has allergies you can have a rose arrangement made with hot house roses as they have no scent and no pollen!

Remember: We are here to help you and work out what appeals to you, your partner & your budget!

I am often asked questions over & over again about Valentine’s Day.

So here are the answers to my Valentine’s Day FAQ & a few funny shares as well!

What do you think it means to give flowers on Valentine’s Day?

Giving flowers on Valentine’s Day is sometimes an excuse for people that would not necessarily give flowers. It also allows someone to write a message that they may not feel comfortable saying.

What kind of funny messages do you remember or any funny stories about deliveries or orders on Valentine’s Day?

A message that I remember but not one to recommend was: “Roses are red,Violets are blue. You’re my little bumface and I love you.

Perhaps a more appropriate verse that I have often suggested is one that my Mum & Dad would say to each other:

“I love you more today than yesterday but not as much as I will tomorrow”.

What funny stories are there of Valentine’s Day?

We have many funny stories and on one Valentine’s Day.   A lady opened the door with no clothes on expecting her husband but instead it was my husband, the courier, delivering the flowers.  Of course she had a shock.  She had a huge surprise.  In fact, that’s why I married my husband!

What are the most common gifts given on Valentine’s Day?

In our shop I would have to say Red roses which is sometimes accompanied with a bear and or chocolates.

What is the best feedback you have ever received about Valentine’s Day?

We often receive feedback that our roses were still looking lovely after 2 weeks but my favourite feedback on a bouquet that we made and attached a beautiful ring to one of the roses was “Thank you, she said yes”.

What flowers combinations are serious and what are fun?

Red roses are simple yet so elegant, rainbow roses are fun & quirky yet both carry the same message.  Natvies can be serious, as can lilies.

What flowers can win someone’s heart?

The flowers can be a partners favourite or simply one that has been remembered when mentioned over time. It can also be a little bit of this and a little bit of that which is often created by the heart.  Let yourself be guided by your heart.  And if in doubt, share your feelings & tell us about your loved one & we will be guided by our own to create the perfect gift her or for him.

“I love you more today than yesterday but not as much as I will tomorrow”.

A quote from Megan’s parents she remembers…
